That is why in two of Ingeborg Bachmann’s cycles of poems (Lieder von einer Insel and Lieder auf der Flucht) Naples appears as a «place of joy» and a place of horror at once, where menacing signs of war and destruction are still tangible. This essay examines Bachmann’s Italian poems and press reports in the light of Ernesto de Martino’s anthropological works. Focusing in particular on the Lieder von einer Insel and on the poem In Apulien, it argues that the poetess took vital inspiration from the memory of ancient traditions and magical rituals deep-rooted in Southern Italian culture. Ingeborg Bachmann’s poetic cycle “Lieder von einer Insel” is based on her sentimental encounter with the composer Hans-Werner Henze in Ischia (1953), as well as on her experience of a landscape in which wind, sea, and volcano bring together the Ancient Greek and the Christian cultural traditions.
