Canyon Vista Campground (fs.usda.gov) is an excellent place to access the lake when it exists, as well as nearby Walnut Canyon. I can't say which campground is better because I haven't camped in either. The lake may provide opportunities for boating, fishing, or swimming but access will depend on specific rules. If you can't get a reservation in many glacier I don't think st Mary's would be a bad second choice. Eleven campsites at Canyon Vista are suitable for tents or trailers 22 feet or less in length. Reservations for other site types can be booked up to two days in advance. With 38 serviced (power) campsites the lower campground offers great fishing at the base of the dam where the St Mary’s River continues its journey eastward and there is a small spring fed pond in which to swim. The best feature of this campground is the proximity to the St. Mary Visitor Center - it's a 0.25 mile walk from the campground on an accessible trail. The eastern end of the park is used for special events, boat launch, Fireworks watching, and sightseeing on the St.Mary’s River. The visitor center is a shuttle stop on the Going to the Sun Road shuttle, which is highly recommended to access the center of the park. However, the more inland you travel, the less likely you are able to find something that fulfills your needs for an outdoor adventure. Florida is known for its beaches.
